SYMBOLSIGNATURE
Here is a Web site that reminds us art on the Web is not always about the medium. This installation work for the Web might be as remarkable for what the artist has judiciously chosen to leave out as it is for what is included. See if you agree.

To those who have
followed happenings at A&T over the past few months, (thank you!), less is more will be a familiar refrain. Well, here it is again, more less than you might have thought possible at a brilliantly focused Web site installation work by Canadian artist Cynthia Cooper.

About the work, in the words of the artist:

"...my work has shifted more to the subject of symbols at large, and without the isolated focus on 'the hand' per se, as sole symbol. A move to viewing symbols as complete thought-forms, and thus language and communication.

The importance of the hand for an artist is one's signature. The eye and hand for the artist are essential. The work stems from a renewed interest in the senses, and those human qualities not reflective in our behaviour from our use of technology."

What's out? Much ado about media. What's in? An exceptionally strong focus on the work at hand...

New media artist Cynthia Cooper
reminds us that new art for the Web need not necessarily be about the Web. I think her choice to deliberately downplay the medium (not even a background color!) works nicely to focus our attention on the art work itself. What do you think?

Carol Wickenhiser-Schaudt, A&T 03/27/97, referred the symbolsignature Web site. Many thanks, Carol.
