In these early days
on the World Wide Web, artists are exploring capabilities of the new media to learn as much as possible. To be expected, it is a good and necessary effort at this time (documented for history here in Zn).

This week it is a pleasure to feature two works by artist Tina LaPorta, whose installations for the Web are at once exploratory and transcendent of their existence in cyberspace. Here are works on the cutting-edge of new media technology -- and -- works of art.

"Passing through media through structure and time. Time which unfolds simultaneously through multiple frames on multiple pages. Time -- passing through our fingers. Moving through pixels and lines, text and sound; the shape of the loop consumes the line."
    - from Traces
Tina LaPorta
is a multimedia artist and teacher whose works explore the very latest audio and video capabilities on the Web, but her works involve more than just technology.

More than the technologies they employ, Tina's works explore notions of time and space, notions of connecting with her audience via technology. Her creative realization of these ideas is better experienced than described, but I would say the result is remarkable in my eye and mind -- magical and mysterious and marvelous -- real art.

"Moving beyond the threshold which divides the space between the real and the imaginary -- the physical and the virtual. Dispersed and projecting: I immerse myself and become an(other)."
    - from Shifting
To move a work
beyond media, mechanics, and techniques employed in creation of the work is a goal of many artists, and Tina shows us by her very beautiful Web installations Traces and Shifting the goal is attainable.

A magical place
of time and space, and a marvelous example of fine art in the new media that is the Web. Thank you, Tina.

These works require browser plug-ins for QuickTime and Shockwave. You will find links to the download sites in Zn Web: Zoots, and in Zn Resources.
