Art Is...

Art is...
a big subject that defies a single, simple definition...

So, without regard to this fact... art is concerned primarily with aesthetics. Art is not design, concerned with function. Art is not craft, concerned with craftsmanship. Art is and is not concerned with the technicalities...

Here are three new works for the Web by three innovative and very talented new media artists. Are these works the beginning of a real Web aesthetic -- a unique new media art?

Enigma n
is a new work by Canadian artist and writer Jim Andrews. By use of some complex programming (DHTML) Jim creates for us a delightful word play on the meaning of... meaning. Letters from the word orbit continuously in time and space to form new patterns, new meanings.

Rising above technical complexities of construction, Enigma n is at once visually exciting, conceptually interesting, humorous, playful, fun... dare I say, witty.

Silence
is a new work by German artist and educator Reiner Strasser. Per much of Reiner's Web art, Silence relies on JavaScript code and logic to create a fascinating interaction of ideas, images, and the viewer/participant (and for this work, sound files by American experimental artist and poet David Knoebel).

Complex and subtle visual and aural textures emerge to quickly leave behind any concern with technicalities. You are engaged by the experience and transported beyond the medium, into the artist's own pure aesthetic.

Childhood in Richmond
is a new work by Australian artist and poet Komninos Zervos. It is the most ambitious of the three works in that it is perhaps the most technically complex, relying on time-synchronized coding plus plug-ins, and is certainly the most conceptually involved -- this work seeks to touch the viewer on an emotional versus an intellectual level.

If it works as well for you as it did me, then you might come away with a real sense of presence, as human presence, way beyond the usual 'Cool!'. Nice work!

...in the end,
many different things for different people, as it should be.

Here are three new works for the Web by three different artists. Look in to see if you find an exciting new art here... real art beyond technicalities and the mechanics of medium...
